“How is that possible?” Asked Tooth, zipping along right behind North.  “He’s so beaten and exhausted and Sandy sprinkled dream sand on him because we though he was having a nightmare!”

“Who knows,” North answered, “We only know he is awake and will be wanting answers.  Poor boy must be terrified.”

When the three Guardians reached Jack’s room, he was indeed awake, but just barely.  Several Elves flitted worriedly around him while he groaned painfully and struggled to open his eyes.

“Pitch…where are you? Show your ugly face, you coward!”

“Jack, it’s alright,” Tooth comforted, gently touching his hand.  “We’re all here.  You’re safe.  Nothing will hurt you.

“Tooth?” Jack managed to open the one eye that was not swollen closed too look at Tooth.  His mouth cocked into a twisted half smile.

Tooth sighed in relief.  “Yes, Jack.  It’s me.  North and Bunny are here too.  Sandy’s asleep in the globe room.”

“Globe room?  Where am I?

“At Pole,” North answered.  “No Nightmares are here.”  Bunny cleared his throat and North amended, “Well…nothing here that will harm you.”

“Pitch,” Jack said with a snarl.

“Snowflake,” Bunny said cautiously, “Pitch isn’t he one who attacked you, mate.”

Jack tried to laugh, but grimaced when the motion shook his broken ribs.  “You’ve been around to many fumes from that egg paint.  I saw what attacked me, and sense you guys found me I guess you did, too.  A heard of Nightmares.  Those things could only have been from Pitch.”

Tooth gently squeezed Jack’s hand.  “It’s a bit more complicated than that.  You see…”

The three Guardians took turns explaining to Jack everything that had happened, starting with the ripples and why he, Tooth, and Sandy had not been informed at once about them.  Jack remained silent and attentive until Tooth began to explain what had happened with Jamie…

“He did WHAT to Jamie?!”  Jack almost sat straight up, but screamed n pain and fell back into bed.

“Whoa there, kid-o,” Bunny warned, placing a hand, or paw rather, on Jack’s shoulder to steady him.  “Jamie’s just fine.  He’s not hurt or trapped in a nightmare.”

“When I get my hands on the Boogieman, I swear I’ll-“

“Jack,” Tooth interrupted, “Just listen.”

Against his will, Jack remained silent through the remainder of the account, even when they explained in detail how and why the Guardians were now working alongside Pitch Black.

“…and that’s when the Yeti came to tell us you were awake,” Tooth concluded.

Jack remained silent long enough that the Guardians thought he might have fallen asleep.

“Still with us, Jackaroo?” Bunny asked.

“Yeah,” Jack said weakly, “It’s just a lot to take it.  Let me get this straight, Pitch lost control of the Nightmares, so now it’s our job to team up with the forces of freaking EVIL to stop them from taking over the world, after which we have no idea if this is going to backfire right in our faces.  Even better, I am without my staff and therefore almost completely without my powers, so even when I do recover, which won’t be in time to fight the Nightmares anyway so what good does that even do, I can’t even do anything.”

“That’s about the gist,” Bunny confirmed.

“Great.  So what do we do now?

“Those Nightmares are madder than a cut snake right now, Bunny mused, “Not to mention there’s probably more than we can count out-“ Bunny’s rant was interrupted when he suddenly opened his mouth an enormous yawn.

“First thing is first!” North announced.  “We are useless without rest.  Everyone to rooms, we must have wits about us if we are to devise strategy.”

“You too, Jack.”  For the first time, Tooth let go of Jack’s half-staff, laying it on the nightstand beside his bed.

The three Guardians began to leave Jacks room when Jack called, “Wait, Tooth.  Could you,” Jack hesitated, “Could you stay with me for a while.  I know you’re exhausted, but I-“

“Of course, Jack.”  Tooth rolled her eyed when North looked back and winked and she sat down on the edge of Jack’s bed.

“Sorry,” Jack said once they were alone.  “I just don’t feel like being alone right now.”

“I understand.”  Tooth laid her hands on Jacks, careful not to disturb his broken wrist.

“Just until I fall asleep?”

“Sure.”

Jack relaxed and closed his eyes.  Despite the worry, fear, anger, and confusion swirling in Jack’s mind, it did not take long for the Guardian of Fun to drift back to sleep.
Basically what is happening right now is that I am going to spit out the occasional blurb of a chapter until I figure out how this is going to play out.  I have an endgame in mind, I just don’t know how to get there.  So bear with me as, if you are still reading this after their ridiculous hiatus it was on, I know you can!

Okay, okay I implied rainbow!snowcone! after I explicitly promised no shipping! Subtle implication is as far as it will ever go, I promise!

Bunny’s Auzie:

Jackaroo - a farm hand trainee, appropriate for Jack as he is the youngest Guardian
